Managing Prior Authorizations in Orthopedic Practices

Providing prior authorizations for surgeries, DME, injections, and other services is now an essential function for orthopedic practices. Determining the most efficient way to complete prior authorizations is a complex issue given the staffing, financial, regulatory, and workflow issues involved. This panel of orthopedic practice administrators will discuss several aspects of the prior authorization process, including in-house vs. outsourced options, prior authorization timing, the services that need prior authorizations, who receives the authorization, what systems are available, and the pros and cons associated with using an outsourced solutions. The panelists will highlight things to watch for when implementing a prior authorization workflow, potential pitfalls, staff feedback, and lessons learned.

David Kobasa

Biography

David Kobasa is the Practice Manager at South Shore Orthopedics in Hingham, MA. Prior to joining SSO, David Kobasa spent 12+ years with RehabCare as an Executive Director for Rehabilitation Services with Care New England (RI) and as an Area Rehab Director with RehabCare (Kindred) overseeing 17 skilled nursing facilities throughout the Northeast Region. With over 20 years of clinical and Healthcare management experience in the post-acute sector, Mr. Kobasa has demonstrated consistent success in leadership, operations and customer service initiatives.

Jennifer Monroe, MBA, CPC, CPPM

Biography

Jennifer has worked in all revenue cycle roles from front desk to practice manager and all points in between. She began working in a mental health practice setting, then found her passion in billing and the revenue cycle process. Her medical billing company served many specialties for 24 years including DME, gynecology, hospitalist care, infectious disease, neonatology, pediatrics, primary care, prosthetics, radiology and orthopedics. Jennifer has taught coding and billing classes, and consulted on collections and practice management issues. Her current work as a Director at OrthoTennessee focuses on continuous improvement, training, standard processes, and collaborative management.

During his 12 years in the military, he learned the importance of efficiency and teamwork and attended Colorado State University where he received his degree in Healthcare Administration and Management. Biography

Shannon Young has an Associates degree in Health Information Management, she is also a Certified Professional Coder, and is currently working on her CPPM (Certified Physician Practice Manager). She is the Co-Director of Business Operations at Bluegrass Orthopaedics in Lexington, KY. She has worked in healthcare for 27 years, 16 years in orthopedics. Her hobbies include her new grandbaby and her church family. She is currently married to the love of her life she has 2 sons and a daughter, son-in-law. Her superpower is to multi-task like a mother.
