The Covid-19 Pandemic has unleashed staffing challenges not seen since WWI and WWII. Employee risk, shortages, burnout, and stress were at an all-time high. Currently, in 2022/2023 we are still facing the aftermath of these pandemic challenges. At the forefront of this, for us as Administrators, is staffing challenges. Elsevier Health, in their recent Clinician of the Future” report, found that 31% of clinicians and 47% of U.S healthcare workers will leave their job by 2025. With staggering numbers supporting that a large percentage of those individuals are contemplating leaving healthcare entirely. The overwhelming response is that these staffing realities would cripple most private practices, hospital departments, and ambulatory surgery centers. The blowback would be catastrophic for patient care and ultimately the patient experience. In an era where upcoming generations are making decisions based on that experience, healthcare has become a competitive business. "Patients first" has been the model for far too long without the heavy realization that in fact, the individuals that should come first, are the healthcare workers. Without that key component, all else fails. Patient care dwindles and the load falls on the individuals who choose to remain within the field creating, as we've seen, an unsustainable environment.
